Quercus: A Legacy of Strength, Wisdom, and Family
Quercus, the Latin word for oak, represents a tree known for its longevity, strength, and wisdom—qualities that resonate deeply with the values I bring to my work.
My step-dad Gordon, a devoted Forester with a deep love for trees, introduced me to the beauty and resilience of the oak. The first Latin name he taught me was Quercus robur, the oak tree—a tree he adored as much as we adored him.
One cherished family memory is a trip to Longleat when my daughter was young. Gord admired a centuries-old oak tree there, and with his keen eye, he picked up an acorn. Back home, he nurtured it into a lovely sapling. That sapling, which started in my mum’s small garden, eventually grew too big and was transplanted to a farm in Warwickshire, where it could flourish freely.
Gord passed away unexpectedly on November 1, 2008, at just 54 years old. We scattered his ashes in Ranscombe Coppice on the Abberley Hills, beside a tree that held special and amusing memories for us.
I became a qualified accountant in September 2008, just six weeks before we lost Gord. He was my wise sounding board, supporting me through my exams and early career. I’ve always felt the sadness of him not seeing the next chapter of my life. So, in a small but meaningful way, I’ve brought him along on this journey.
